Philly Cares Day Clean-Up a Huge Success!

On October 22nd, nearly 100 volunteers from Greater Philadelphia Cares joined members of Awbury's Landscape Committee, Awbury's Saturday volunteer crew, the Chew and Belfield Neighbors' Club, and individual neighbors and friends in an all-out effort to tackle problem areas along Chew Avenue and other target spots in the neighborhood.  Philadelphia's sanitation department worked with volunteers to remove hundreds of bags of debris along with large branches.  Members of the Landscape Committee helped coordinate the effort, and put in a full day's work clearing the garden beds at the font entrance, tackling issues along Awbury Road, and advising groups working on adjacent properties.  Perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the day was clearing the sidewalk along Chew Avenue from Awbury Road to Haines street, which was literally impassable before Saturday with fallen trees, vine overgrowth, and tall weeds.  Next time you're in the neighborhood, take a look, and marvel at the enormous amount of work that was accomplished!
