Awbury Hosts Annual Meeting & Juday Lecture

The Annual Meeting of the Awbury Arboretum Association was held on Sunday, November 4th.  Board chairman Mark Sellers opened the meeting with a welcome to members.  Departing board members Bill Madeira, Jalila Brown, Jane Evans, Sara Price and Bob Kauffman were graciously thanked for their years of service, and two new members - Nicole Juday and Kristin Winch - were unanimously elected.  General Manager Chris van de Velde followed with a presentation detailing financial information (which may be found in the Annual Report here: Awbury Annual Report 2012).  Landscape Manager Denis Lucey spoke on the state of the landscape; including triumphs of the past year and plans for the coming year, Education Director Heather Zimmerman energized the audience with innovative ideas and strategies for revitalizing Awbury's Education programming, and Landscape Committee chairperson Claudia Levy showcased Awbury's newly created Stewardship Plan (which may be found here: 2012 Stewardship Plan).

Following the meeting, the public was invited to join members in attending a presentation by horticultural historian and newly-elected board member Nicole Juday.  Nicole's lecture, "Forest to Field to Flower: 300 Years of Horticultural History in Germantown" was extremely well-attended, and the parlors of the Francis Cope House were filled to overflowing as nearly seventy eager attendees squeezed in.  (Read more about Nicole Juday and Awbury's efforts to showcase Germantown's horticultural history from the Philadelphia Inquirer here).

After the presentation, Awbury members, board, staff, and public mingled over light refreshments from Weavers Way Co-Op - including a delicious leek-dip and a carrot-cumin dip made from produce grown by Weavers Way farmers at the Awbury Agricultural Village."
